“Don’t be afraid to be different. There will always be people who will accept you.”

Hannah Hughes used to play soccer when she was younger, but after losing her leg to cancer, she was not able to follow that passion anymore. Hughes then learned about disabled athlete sports. She wanted to stay active, so she began to play sled hockey in 2013. After a few years, she attended a sled hockey camp in 2016. Out of approximately 50 people, Hughes was in the top 15 to make it onto the USA Sled Hockey Team. Since then, Hughes has always been a part of the team. She plays in the defensive position. Hughes describes sled hockey as being like able-bodied hockey, just sitting in a sled.

“Everyone on the team has a story, but once they are on the ice everything fades away, and it’s just the sport,” said Hughes.

Hughes explains that some things may be harder for one person and easier for another, but everyone on the team contributes their own unique strengths.

Hughes calls this team her family. “They are all like sisters to me,” said Hughes. “They have all given each other the confidence to be different.”

Hughes says, “Don’t be afraid to be different. There will always be people who will accept you.” The team has created such a strong bond, and they call each other sisters because they are just like family. Hughes explains that this sport has made her a different person, but a better person.
